Have you ever driven down Fountain Hills Blvd. and wondered why there is a tiny parking lot between Emerald and Kingstree? That is the trailhead for the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden.
This 8-acre garden was founded by Jane Haynes in 1975 as a wildlife preserve and botanical garden. Visitors can meander along the half-mile-long trail as they read about the 29 identified desert plants along the way. There are fascinating rock formations, desert wildlife, an abandoned campsite from the old P-Bar Ranch days, and a dam wall constructed in 1941.
Although the trail stays close to Fountain Hills Blvd., visitors will feel they’ve wandered off into the solitude of nature.
In this video, hear Haynes telling the story of her vision for this preserve and get a glimpse of the beauty that awaits you right in the heart of our community.
