Every January or February, the Hashknife Pony Express makes a 200-mile journey from Holbrook, Arizona to Scottsdale, Arizona carrying 20,000 pieces of mail. These are delivered at post offices along the way on horseback. Over two dozen riders dressed in authentic cowboy attire are led by the Navajo County Hashknife Sheriff’s Posse. All riders are sworn in as honorary mail messengers.
Fountain Hills is lucky to be on this route. Riders are expected to arrive at the Fountain Hills post office at 3:00 pm. Spectators gather along Avenue of the Fountains to watch them on their approach to the post office at La Monatan and Avenue of the Fountains.
We sat down with Captain Mark Reynolds of the Hashknife Pony Express last year to learn more about this historical event.
