Hiking Season Returns to Fountain Hills: Take the 2026 Hiking Challenge

November is one of the best months to get outside in Fountain Hills, AZ. Cooler mornings return, the desert light softens and our local trails become the perfect place to reconnect with nature, meet new people and explore more of the community.

This year, hiking season begins with the 2026 Fountain Hills Hiking Challenge, held November 1 through 30 in partnership with the Town of Fountain Hills and the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills. Whether you are a regular on the trails or still learning your way around the preserve, the Challenge offers a fun reason to lace up your hiking shoes and try something new.

How the Fountain Hills Hiking Challenge Works

Participants have two ways to complete the month-long Challenge:

  • Complete six qualifying hikes
  • Complete hikes totaling 35 miles

Registered participants receive a commemorative Fountain Hills Hiking Challenge T-shirt. Those who complete the Challenge can share their hiking photos with Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation for a chance to win a $50 gift card and Fountain Hills merchandise.

Register for the Hiking Challenge through Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation.

Start the Month at the Hiking Challenge Kickoff

The official kickoff takes place Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Kiwanis Ramada near the Splash Pad at Fountain Park.

Stop by at 8:00 a.m. for coffee, cookies and a chance to meet Sonoran Conservancy leaders and volunteers. At 9:00 a.m., the group will head out on the two-mile Lake Overlook Trail. Hikers who want a little more distance can add a loop around Fountain Park.

The kickoff is an easy and welcoming way to begin the Challenge, learn about the upcoming season and connect with others who enjoy Fountain Hills trails. Registration is not required for coffee and cookies, but advance registration is required for the guided hike.

November Guided Hike Highlights

The Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills offers an impressive variety of guided hikes throughout November. Each outing requires separate registration, even if you are already registered for the Hiking Challenge.

Mesquite Hollow Loop Hike | November 5

This 5.1-mile, moderately difficult hike follows the Promenade Trail to Mesquite Hollow and returns by way of the Lower Sonoran Trail. The route is named for a nearly 100-year-old mesquite tree and showcases a trail hand-built by the Conservancy’s volunteer Trailblazers.

Early Morning North Leg Trail Hike | November 10

Perfect for early risers, this 2.5-mile hike follows a newer preserve trail along a ridgeline. The downhill stretch on the way out means hikers should be prepared for an uphill return.

Andrews-Kinsey to the Hitching Post | November 13

This rewarding 5.8-mile out-and-back hike climbs through Adero Canyon to the Sunrise Trail and its hitching post. Hikers who want an added challenge may continue another half-mile to the top of Sunrise Peak.

Ridgeline Loop | November 16

The 4.5-mile Ridgeline Loop delivers wide views over Adero Canyon, interesting rock formations and plenty of native Sonoran Desert vegetation. Frequent ups and downs and a few rocky sections make this a moderately difficult outing.

Wilderness Trail and Mesquite Hollow Loop | November 18

Experienced hikers can explore the preserve’s newest and most difficult trail on this 4.9-mile outing. The narrow, rocky Wilderness Trail was designed to feel like a true backcountry route and reaches elevations above 3,000 feet. The hike is led by volunteer Trailblazer DJ Willard, who helped envision, design and build the trail.

Sonoran Trail Full Loop | November 20

This moderately difficult 5.6-mile route follows the Promenade Trail before looping along the Sonoran and Lower Sonoran trails. Two crossover options allow hikers to shorten the route if needed.

More Than Hiking: Learn About the Desert

You do not have to take on a long or difficult trail to enjoy the season. The Conservancy’s November calendar also includes shorter walks, family outings and educational programs designed to help residents and visitors better understand the desert around us.

Highlights include:

  • Walk With a Naturalist, November 3: A leisurely two-mile hike with frequent stops to explore local plants, animals, geology and ecosystems.
  • Exploring Among Saguaros, November 7: An easy one-mile walk through the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden, including the historic P-Bar Ranch dam and unusual saguaros.
  • Bring Your Kids to Hike Day, November 11: A one-mile Overlook Trail hike for children ages five and older, followed by a visit from the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center.
  • Birding for Beginners, November 18: Learn the basics of identifying birds by size, shape, behavior, habitat and sound.
  • Waterbirds at Fountain Park, November 20: A relaxed walk around the lake to spot ducks, coots, herons, grebes and other seasonal visitors.
  • Dessert in the Desert: A series of one-hour programs exploring topics such as Indigenous desert foods, wildlife, twilight and the night sky.

These programs are a wonderful way to learn from experienced volunteers while enjoying the outdoors at a comfortable pace.

Meet the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills

The Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills is a local nonprofit powered by volunteers who help care for, share and build appreciation for Fountain Hills’ natural desert spaces. Its volunteers serve in several ways, including leading hikes and nature programs, welcoming visitors at trailheads, helping maintain the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden and building trails in Fountain Hills and the McDowell Mountain Preserve.

You will see that work throughout the November schedule. Volunteer Stewards guide hikes and teach nature programs, Trailhead Hosts help visitors get oriented and Trailblazers build and maintain trails such as Mesquite Hollow and Wilderness.

How to Get Involved

The easiest place to begin is the November 2 kickoff at Fountain Park. You can meet Conservancy volunteers, ask questions and learn which role best fits your interests and schedule.

You can also:

  • Register for a guided hike or nature program
  • Volunteer as a Steward, Trailhead Host or Trailblazer
  • Support or volunteer with the Fountain Hills Desert Botanical Garden
  • Participate in educational programs and community events
  • Donate to support local trails, programs and desert stewardship

Visit the Fountain Hills Hiking Challenge page for Challenge details, registration information and links to the Sonoran Conservancy’s fall hikes and events.

Before You Head Out

Read the description for each hike carefully, since distances and difficulty levels vary. Bring the recommended amount of water, wear a hat and sturdy shoes or boots with good traction, and carry snacks for longer outings. Hiking poles are recommended for many preserve routes. Dogs are not permitted on the organized hikes listed here.

Need a trail map before you head out? Stop by REMAX Sun Properties at 16824 E. Avenue of the Fountains in Fountain Hills. We have Fountain Hills trail maps available and would be happy to help you get started.

November’s Hiking Challenge is about more than checking trails off a list. It is an opportunity to enjoy the Sonoran Desert, discover new parts of Fountain Hills and build connections with people who appreciate the outdoors as much as you do.
