Best Northern AZ Hikes for Spring

Outdoors Beth Kohoutek May 16, 2024

Northern Arizona has some beautiful hiking trails that are perfect for escaping the summer heat! Grab your hiking boots, snacks, and plenty of water, and head up to the cool alpine regions of our state. Just remember to start early in the day to avoid the heat and stay hydrated throughout your adventure.

Flagstaff Area

  • Fatman's Loop Trail: This 2.4-mile trail is perfect for a family-friendly hike with great views.
  • Inner Basin Trail: A 3.2-mile trail featuring thick aspen forests and narrow switchbacks. The higher elevation may impact those coming from lower desert areas, so take your time and enjoy the surroundings.
  • Fisher Point & Walnut Canyon: This 12-mile out-and-back trail offers peace and quiet and leads you to a serene lake. A great option for bikers too!
  • Lava River Cave: Escape the heat by going underground in this cave with year-round temperatures around 42 degrees. The 0.4-mile trail can be challenging with steep entrances and tight spots, so bring rugged hiking shoes and three light sources.

Payson Area

  • Horton Creek: This 8.5-mile out-and-back trail is perfect for waterfall and creek lovers. Expect some creek crossings, but you can usually hop across without getting wet.
  • See Canyon Trail: A 6.1-mile out-and-back trail offering stunning scenery, moss-covered trees, and a lovely creek. Prepare for a little splash when you cross the water!

White Mountain Area

  • Los Burros Trail: Rated #1 in the White Mountains, this 13-mile loop trail offers beautiful pine forests, patches of aspens, and open meadows. There's even a shorter 8-mile loop option.
  • Thompson Trail #629: A 4.7-mile trail near Eagar, rated easy and featuring lush meadows, pine forests, and a meandering river with small waterfalls.
