Nestled against the beautiful Sonoran Desert landscape, Fountain Hills is becoming a favorite destination for dark sky tourism and outdoor adventure. With wide-open desert views, low light pollution, and incredible Arizona sunsets, visitors and locals alike are discovering the magic of the night sky right here in town.
As temperatures warm up this summer, evening and early morning outdoor events are the perfect way to experience the natural beauty of the desert while enjoying cooler weather and unforgettable scenery.
Dark sky tourism continues to gain popularity across Arizona as travelers seek places to disconnect from city lights and reconnect with nature. Fountain Hills offers easy access to peaceful desert trails, mountain views, and stunning nighttime skies.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or already call Fountain Hills home, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the desert after sunset, from moonlight hikes and astronomy events to sunrise adventures that showcase the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
We are also incredibly lucky to have local guide Vicky Derksen right here in Fountain Hills leading these unique guided desert experiences. Her knowledge of the Sonoran Desert, local trails, and nighttime desert environment helps create unforgettable outdoor adventures for both residents and visitors.

Full Blue Moon Walk
Join Vicky Derksen for a peaceful and immersive evening walk through the Sonoran Desert during May’s rare Full Blue Moon. Guests will experience all three stages of twilight before watching the moon rise over the desert landscape.
This meditative walk encourages participants to slow down, engage their senses, and experience the quiet beauty of the desert at night as moonlight reveals hidden textures and shapes across the landscape.
The trail is under one mile round-trip on uneven desert terrain with rocks and natural obstacles requiring careful footing in low light. Suitable for ages 12 and up.
Space is limited, and attendees are encouraged to join the waitlist if tickets sell out.
