International Observe the Moon Night in Fountain Hills

Look up! One of Fountain Hills’ most fitting fall events returns this September as our community joins people around the world for International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

From 7:30 to 9:00 PM, the International Dark Sky Discovery Center will host a free evening of lunar viewing, hands-on activities and astronomy at its new home in Downtown Fountain Hills.

And there may be no better community in the Valley to celebrate the night sky.

See the Moon Like Never Before

International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide celebration that encourages people to observe and learn more about the Moon and its connections to science, exploration and human culture. The official 2026 celebration takes place September 19, with events happening around the world.

Here in Fountain Hills, guests will have the opportunity to view the Moon’s craters and ancient lava plains through the largest public telescope in the Greater Phoenix area.

The evening will also feature hands-on lunar activities for kids and adults, along with staff and volunteer astronomers who can help visitors get a closer look at our nearest celestial neighbor.

The event is free and open to everyone.

Fountain Hills: An International Dark Sky Community

What makes this event especially appropriate for Fountain Hills is our community’s commitment to preserving the night sky.

Fountain Hills has been designated an International Dark Sky Community since 2018, recognizing the town’s efforts to protect its naturally dark skies and reduce light pollution. It is also one of only two International Dark Sky Communities located near a major metropolitan area.

Our location helps make that possible. The McDowell Mountains help shield Fountain Hills from the glow of the Phoenix metro area, while protected and tribal lands surrounding the community help preserve the darkness to the north, south and east.

It’s one of those qualities of Fountain Hills that you really appreciate after sunset. On a clear evening, you don’t have to travel far from home to look up and see a sky filled with stars.

A Preview of What’s Coming to Fountain Hills

The event is also a chance to experience the site of Fountain Hills’ new International Dark Sky Discovery Center, currently being developed as a major destination for astronomy and dark-sky education.

The 22,000-square-foot center is planned to include a large public observatory, planetarium, Inspiration Theater and interactive Night Sky Experience exhibits. The Discovery Center’s website currently anticipates opening the full facility in early 2027.

That makes International Observe the Moon Night a fun opportunity to get a glimpse of what’s ahead while celebrating one of the things that already makes Fountain Hills so special.
