Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River is a tribute to the brave men and women who served aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Here, their stories and sacrifices are honored, ensuring that their legacy remains alive for future generations.
Throughout our nation’s history, the contributions of American servicemen and women to our safety and peace have been immeasurable. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens stand as a reminder of the heroism exhibited by those who fought during World War II and other conflicts. This memorial is dedicated to ensuring that their service and dedication are never forgotten.
Visitors to the gardens are immersed in the history of the USS Arizona, which includes a detailed timeline of the Pearl Harbor attack, accounts from survivors, and a look at the tragic events of that day. Guests can view a piece of the USS Arizona itself, a relic that embodies the devastation and sacrifice from that fateful day.
The story of the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens began in 2007 when a retired flag from the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor was awarded to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and its American Legion Post 114. This honor set off a journey that transformed both the community and the state of Arizona. By 2018, the tribe was gifted a significant portion of the original superstructure of the USS Arizona, identified as part of the Boat House. This historic piece served as the original memorial at Pearl Harbor and is the largest artifact ever given to a tribal community.
The gardens span the exact length and width of the USS Arizona, featuring over 1,500 commemorative columns that outline the ship’s perimeter. Each column is significant: lit columns represent those who perished on December 7, 1941, while columns without light commemorate the survivors. As night falls, these columns glow softly—symbolizing the eternal light of each individual’s spirit.
At the heart of the gardens is the Boat House relic, a monumental structure measuring 12 feet by 5 feet by 7 feet. Displayed adjacent to the tranquil waters, it is enclosed in a temperature-controlled case to protect its historical value. Positioned thoughtfully to mirror its original location on the USS Arizona, it offers visitors a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance.
