Maricopa County Updates: A Growing Hub of Opportunity and Community Investment
Maricopa County, home to Fountain Hills and Phoenix metro area, is one of the largest counties and rapidly growing counties in the United States. From its strong financial health to its support for local initiatives. Here are some key updates shared during the recent Fountain Hills Chamber Breakfast “State of the County, 2024” by Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin our District 2 Representative.
Maricopa County is the fourth most populous county in the U.S., boasting an impressive growth rate that continues to lead the nation. In 2018, the county welcomed over 81,000 new residents, making it the fastest-growing county in the country. This surge is fueled by migration from neighboring states like California, Texas, and Colorado, as well as other parts of the country, drawn by the county's strong economy, and abundant opportunities.
Maintaining a budget reserve of 11%, Maricopa County showcases a strong financial position that ensures stability and resilience. This reserve supports essential county operations, providing a buffer against economic downturns and unexpected expenses. It reflects the county’s commitment to sound financial management, allowing it to effectively serve its growing population and attract new businesses to the area. Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin expressed pride in the county’s fiscal strategy, noting, “We are taxing less and spending less this year, yet we are still providing our residents with exceptional customer service.”
Maricopa County continues to invest in local community initiatives, including a $100,000 contribution to the development of the Dark Sky Center in Fountain Hills. This project aims to preserve the region’s dark skies, promoting astronomy and educational opportunities while enhancing the quality of life for residents. As a designated Dark Sky Community, Fountain Hills benefits from these efforts to maintain its unique natural environment, drawing visitors and commerce to our town.
To address the growing needs of the community, Maricopa County is constructing a new state-of-the-art animal shelter in Mesa. This facility will provide improved care and support for animals, showcasing the county’s commitment to animal welfare and public service. The new shelter represents a significant investment in community infrastructure. If you’re thinking of adopting a new pet fees have been waived click here for more information.
Public safety is a top priority in Maricopa County, with 47% of the overall budget dedicated to core services like law enforcement, jails, probation, courts, and criminal prosecution and defense. The County Attorney’s Office and Adult Probation have contingency funds set aside to support projected growth in staffing needs, ensuring the safety with security of the community is top priority and addressing drugs and shoplifting rings in our county.
Maricopa County’s investments in community development, public safety, and financial management underscore its position as a vibrant and attractive place to live, work, and play.
